A Custom Desktop Rack Worthy of the Gear It Holds

Every studio eventually reaches the same point.

There comes a day when one more piece of gear arrives—but there’s simply nowhere left to put it.

That moment came at Iconica Vegas when we added one of our favorite pieces of analog hardware: the Manley Variable Mu Limiter Compressor. It wasn’t just another rack unit. It’s a compressor that begs to be touched throughout a mix, making it essential that it live within arm’s reach of the listening position rather than tucked away in a distant equipment rack.

Fortunately, when we designed the studio, we left an open space between our two outboard gear bays with dreams of installing a large-format analog console someday.

That day hasn’t arrived—at least not yet.

Instead, the Variable Mu inspired something entirely different.

Rather than filling the space with an off-the-shelf desktop rack, we decided to build something that reflected the same philosophy behind the equipment it would house: uncompromising quality, timeless design, and meticulous craftsmanship.

The result is a handcrafted desktop rack enclosure featuring genuine leather, polished chrome trim, rich mahogany accents, and vibration-isolating feet. Every detail was chosen to complement both the aesthetics of the studio and the prestige of the equipment it supports.

Because the Manley Variable Mu is one of the warmest-running pieces of analog hardware in professional audio, ventilation became a critical part of the design. Generous airflow surrounds the unit on every side, allowing heat to dissipate naturally while preserving the clean, furniture-quality appearance.

The finished piece feels less like a rack and more like a piece of studio furniture—something deserving of the equipment it holds.

We believe that the enclosure for exceptional gear should reflect the same level of care and craftsmanship as the equipment inside it. After all, these are the tools responsible for shaping countless recordings and unforgettable performances.

Thanks to ordering more materials than the project ultimately required, we’ve decided to build one additional enclosure.

Only two of this exact design will ever exist.
